Maribel Torres, CCDT
CCTA CERTIFIED BEHAVIOR SPECIALIST/ DOG TRAINER
Since I was a young child living in Puerto Rico, I have always had a love of animals. I fondly remember helping my parents care for the goats and chickens on our small family farm. We always had a dog while growing up along with a variety of stray dogs freely wandering the neighborhood. Not realizing it at the time, I gained valuable experience working with my own dogs and learning the personalities of strays to safely interact with them as well.
As an adult, I moved to Buffalo, NY with my three young children at the time with only the clothes on our backs and what we could fit in a few suitcases. When I arrived there, I did not speak the English language fluently and had to quickly establish a job and create a new life for my family. This experience taught me the value of hard work and perseverance. Within two years I bought my first house in Lockport, NY where I raised my children and continued my own personal growth. I began to study the Art of Kenpo Karate and eventually obtained a 3rd degree black belt in Karate and black belt in Judo and Jiu Jitsu. I began to teach at my school and learned how to train both adults and children to reach their maximum potential. This is where I realized my passion for teaching and training others.
My love of dogs has never faded and when I began working with my own German Shepherds and my Pit mix rescue, I discovered my other passion, working with dogs. By becoming a dog trainer, I had the opportunity to combine both and teach Humans how to train their dogs. After an exhaustive research of training methods, I chose to pursue certification with training based on Least Intrusive Minimally Adverse (LIMA) strategy to train dogs in a humane and positive manner. I obtained Certification through Catch Canine Academy as a behavior specialist/dog trainer. I continued my education with course work on aggression in dogs with Michael Shikashio, CDBC, Canine/Feline CPR and first aid, dog tricks. I am now certified to train service dogs with a certification from Animal Behavior College.
